PETRA CORONATO is probably the only author in the world who didn’t only read Alexanderplatz, but also swept it. She is the owner of tongue tongue Hong Kong, a company founded in 1993 with dependences in Berlin, Vienna and Zurich, which recycles fiction profitably and unpunished to this day. In 2006, she commenced the ongoing photography project The Poetry of Document.
Dantini Michele
MICHELE DANTINI’s (1966) work is characterized by its handling of trans-cultural practices and their socio-environmental implications. A widely translated essayist and performative lecturer, he holds a position as Professor of Contemporary Art History at the Università del Piemonte Orientale, Italy. Doutreluingne Pauline
PAULINE DOUTRELUINGNE (1982) lived in Beijing for four years, where she co-organized the 2006 Borderline Moving Images Festival. She lives in Berlin and curates projects that bridge European and Asian art. For META, she interviewed Chen Wei in Archeology of the Future.

Hugo Pieter
Artist PIETER HUGO (1976) has spent his whole life in Cape Town, South Africa, though travelled extensively pursuing his characteristic brand of documentary photography. A 2002-3 residency at the Beneton Group Communication Research Center, Fabrica, also led to work with Colors magazine. Lin Tao
TAO LIN (1983) is an American poet, novelist and short story writer. He is the author of Shoplifting from American Apparel, Eeeee Eee Eeee, and Bed, as well as two poetry collections, you are a little bit happier than I am, and cognitive-behavioral therapy. Lin’s second novel, Richard Yates, was published in September 2010.

DAVID MAISEL’s (1961) photographs chronicle the complex relationships between natural systems and human intervention. His work is included in many permanent collections, such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Maisel lives and works in the area of San Francisco. See Blooming Souls.
Maximishin Sergey
SERGEY MAXIMISHIN (1964) photographed for the Soviet Military Force Group on Cuba from 1985 to 1987. A learned physicist, he worked in the scientific and technical expertise laboratory in the Hermitage Museum and has gone on to become an award winning press photographer.

CONNIE MENDOZA (1971) is a media artist, working between Berlin and Barcelona. Fata Morgana and Other Optical Phenomena discusses her film, in which Mendoza travels back to her birthplace to trace the complex relationships of her childhood to Chilean history and space travel, thereby producing images that mediate the perception of time as a highly subjective matter.

RUA MINX is Donna Huanca (1980), an artist who deals with clothing as shelter, transportable homes for nomads and cultural and genetic traces. Her various projects have received a range of support, from the Dallas Museum of Art to Städelschule, Frankfurt; from the Incehon Women’s Biennale Korea to British Vogue. Architect WILLEM JAN NEUTELINGS (1959) has taught at the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam and Harvard University. His firm, Neutelings Riedijk Architects, is located in Rotterdam. He wrote Spomenik, the Monuments of Former Yugoslavia on Jan Kempenaer’s photo-documentation.

Okón Yoshua
Yoshua Okón was born in Mexico City in 1970 where he currently lives. In his often absurd and provocative art, Okón stages partially scripted scenes using non-actors whose own identities and histories make up the true, underlying story. See Octopus. LISE PATT is the founder of the Institute of Cultural Inquiry, a peripatetic visual think tank currently headquartered in Los Angeles, CA. Over the years she has treated ‘collaboration’ as an artist medium, in the development of a non-profit organization that embraces ‘collective camouflage’ in their ongoing projects. Shapiro Alan
ALAN SHAPIRO (1956) is a key contributor to the fields of idea philosophy, software engineering and social choreography. At 15, he began studying at MIT and has more recently published a book on Star Trek and given talks at the Transmediale and Ars Electronica festivals. Introduction by Hili Perlson, interview with David Maisel
People have always searched for life’s meaning with the aid of a belief in one after death. A fascination with the idea of immaterial existence, together with an unwillingness to accept notions of existential meaninglessness, has spawned countless religious, metaphysical and esoteric theories regarding a possible afterlife. Eschatology and the notion of resurrection in both Christian and Abrahamic religions, as well as the belief in reincarnation deal with the continuation of our biological, material life. In Judaism for example, cremation is forbidden, lest our bodies are nowhere to be found when the Messiah comes to revive the dead. However, matter continues to exist in one form or another, even after the body decomposes and eventually disintegrates. Furthermore, the afterlife is open to interpretation, despite the metaphysical hegemony of organized religion. In an outbuilding of the Oregon State hospital, thousands of copper canisters line the rows of pine shelves in a dusty, neglected room. Each canister holds the cremated remains of a mental patient who died in the hospital between 1833 (the year the asylum was founded) and the 1970s. These are the bodies that remained unclaimed by the patients’ families. Over time, chemical reactions and storage wear and tear have transformed the formerly identical canisters into extraordinary and uniquely brand marked microcosms. Their surfaces have merged with their content, creating an amalgam of corroded copper and human ashes that has come to bloom with magnificent crystal formations.
Photographer David Maisel spent days documenting the canisters in the dusty room he now refers to as a library. His photographs capture the eerie effect of the vibrant minerals burgeoning from the rusty cans that, despite the phenomena’s natural explanation, invite metaphysical contemplation: the patients’ souls almost seem to rebel against their uniformed containment and “pour” out of the canister. With their unique shapes and colors, the formations appear as an affirmation of the patients’ material afterlife.
META asked David Maisel to share the affect that photo-
graphing the Library of Dust has had on him:
META: How did you become aware of the canister’s existence?
David Maisel: I read about their existence on a blog site, and immediately knew that I wanted to photograph these objects.
You call the room where the canisters were found The Library of Dust. Why?
On my first visit to the hospital, as I was preparing to photograph the canisters in situ (on the shelves where they had been stored), prisoners from the local penitentiary were called in to clean up the adjacent hallway and rooms of this structure. A young prisoner leaned into the room from the open doorway, scanned the shelves lined with copper canisters, and murmured The Library of Dust. With his statement, the convict gave a structure and title to this project.
A library is a place of order, of systematic filing and categorizing. It houses knowledge. The Library of Dust on the other hand is erratic and characterized by omissions. What knowledge did you find on its shelves?
The attempts by the hospital to give order to the more than 5,000 canisters—each containing the cremated remains of a patient from the psychiatric facility—showed the many points at which the system broke down. Canisters went missing; the numbers stamped into the lid of each canister repeated on occasion; or a canister might contain two different sets of numbers. The ‘knowledge’ that I found on the shelves? I suppose I found a library of souls, where the human ash contents of these canisters began to react with their copper housings, creating beautiful, unique, and unpredictable mineral formations on the cans' surfaces. found that life continues, even in an alchemical, mineralogical sense, long after the human body had been eradicated.
The uniform canisters were left in that room for decades and forgotten. Did you find it comforting that the dents, deformations and colors of the blooming minerals give each canister an individual identity?
Well, they weren’t entirely forgotten, but they certainly were almost entirely ignored. I found the individuation of the canisters to be quite life-affirming. They are incredibly charged objects; I found them magnetic and compelling and disturbing, as well as comforting.
In an article published on your website you compare the symbolic library to the paradigm of the haunted house in nineteenth century literature where the house is a crypt for both the living and the dead. Being in the room, did you feel like you were stepping into a mental space where your projections and reality conflated?
The room where the canisters were stored was overwhelming. I spent many hours there, over a number of visits to the hospital, in order to make these pictures. The room was both a real space and a metaphorical one, just as the canisters are both hard, obdurate objects and lyrical, poetic, mysterious, and unknowable ones.
You refer to the series as a ‘move to a new territory’ for you. What does this metaphorical territory consist of?
A territory that is at once metaphysical and physical, dream-like and factual. The canisters are a way to think about the permeable borders between life and death, sane and insane, past and present.
Do you wish to be cremated?
Great question! I’ve never thought about it—but now I will!
